Between the Lines: Jessica Daniliuk

Jessica Daniliuk contributed the short story “A Summer Tradition” to Just One . . .: A Summer Romance Anthology, published by And You Press in June 2025.

What is your writing process? Do you have a specific space to work in, or a set time of day? Is there anything you need to have with you?

When I write, I am constantly seeking a change in scenery. I will start at the kitchen table and end in the living room. I prefer writing at night, with my headphones in, listening to calm music.

Is there a book that inspired you to become an author?

I was obsessed with the Magic Tree House series when I was younger. I loved how you followed the same characters, but each story was a completely new adventure. The serial aspect was great for my short attention span, and I think that has influenced my want to write short stories.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Sometimes it can feel impossible to get yourself to the desk and start writing. So, it’s important to celebrate the small victories. If you spend even five minutes writing, that is something to be proud of. Eventually it starts to add up, and you will form a routine.

What is something you love about writing for an anthology?

I love the community that forms. I’ve gotten so much support from my fellow anthology authors and have gotten to read such amazing content! It’s great having bookish friends.

Is there anything that inspired you to write this particular story (“A Summer Tradition”)? Do you have any summer traditions?

I really enjoy writing flawed characters, especially when the story is from their POV. I’ve been thinking of including this kind of plotline in a story for a while and when given the prompt of “one” and the forced proximity it evokes, I thought it would be the perfect time for it. I was interested in writing about the feelings that come up when you are holding on to such a big secret and forced to be around the people involved. I don’t have many summer traditions anymore, but being from New England, I do have to get some fresh seafood each year—it’s practically mandatory.

What is your favorite summer activity?

I love swimming. When I was little, my mom would nickname me “dolphin” or “water bug” because of how long I would stay in the water. My ideal summer day would consist of spending time by the pool with loved ones, eating delicious food, and listening to upbeat music.
